VEGETABLE CROPS PRODUCTION & MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

I. Statement of Purpose

The mission is to provide the Midwest vegetable industry with guidance to manage available resources that will attain sustained profitability through a unique, highly integrated program of research, instruction and extension education.

To research the development of skills, technologies & techniques that maximize long term profitability of crops, minimize economic inputs and achieve or exceed government mandated environmental standards.

To conduct an innovative informational and educational structure that will empower growers to make management decisions which will result in economically and environmentally sound production of profitable crops.

To develop and implement teaching programs that will provide the industry with a labor force skilled and knowledgeable in all phases of production.

The vision of the program is a dynamic focusing of OSU resources (human and material) to address the needs and interests of the vegetable industry in Ohio and beyond. As OSU Vegetable Team members, we will:

Strengthen the communications link among OSU personnel, industry clientele, program funders and other interested parties vital to the vegetable industry.

Concentrate efforts to identify and prioritize research on the major issues affecting the Midwest vegetable industry.

Disseminate research-based information through effective formal instruction and extension programs.

Enhance the ability of OSU professionals in the appropriate application of their expertise to address the challenges, needs and issues of the vegetable industry.

Discover, unite and extend the broad base of OSU resources to serve the industry in a more effective manner.

Develop leadership in the vegetable industry so that it can provide its members the guidance and direction for the future.

The vegetable industry is broadly defined to include all phases of vegetable production for fresh market and processing, vegetable processing & vegetable marketing.

II. Current Initiatives & Objectives

(1) Vegetable Weed Control

1. Identify the major weed problems in specific vegetable crops

2. Define present weed control methods for identified weed problems

3. Identify new potential weed control products and cultural practices for Ohio

4. Perform tolerance and residue research for labeling new weed control products in Ohio

5. Implement IR-4's, third party contracts and section 18's

6. Inform growers about weed control options in vegetable crops

(2) Farm Labor Management

1. Improve the management skills and productivity of growers by helping them:

a) Understand labor regulations

b) Develop and implement plan to meet labor regulations

c) Improve communications skills with farm labor

d) Improve conflict resolution skills

2. Improve the skills and productivity of farm labor by helping them

a) Understand federal and state labor laws and regulations

b) Understand their role in complying with labor regulations

c) Improve communication skills with management

d) Improve conflict resolution skills

e) Improve the family support environment

3. Improve the skills and productivity of management and labor specifically involved with the pickling cucumber industry

a) Address specific and unique needs of the pickling cucumber industry.

(3) Future Directions of the Ohio Vegetable Industry

1. Specialty Veg. Crops Research and Education

2. Distance Learning Efforts (Websites for research reports, teaching, extension)

3. More effort in general postharvest physiology of vegetables

(4) Fresh Market Programs

(5) Integrated Pest Management

1. Evaluate whether current publications (bulletins, fact sheets, videos) and educational programs(meetings, workshops) are adequately meeting the IPM needs of our clientele (agents and ag industry).

2. Prioritize veg crops for which development and/or implementation of IPM guidelines are needed in Ohio.

3. Survey team members to determine what IPM activities should be pursued for the '97 season in terms of 1) topics, 2) people, 3) grant opportunities.

(6)Dialogue on Science in Society

(7) Off Campus College Courses

V. Priorities for new positions, and justification for each.

1. Plant Mineral Nutrition (E/R/T) - basically as described in 4/96 HCS Strategic Plan, with considerble time (75%+) spent on needs of vegetable and fruit production.

2. Staff Support - for Website development & maintenance - images, reports, syllabi in vegetable crop area.

3. Postharvest (E/R) Physiology of Hort Food Crops - a beeter understanding utilization of postharvest science and technology will be necessary for our vegetable (and fruit) industries to remain competitive.

VI. Other

Facilities and equipment to achieve many of the goals stated above are less than satisfactory. Many items described in the HCS Strategic Plan (pgs. 14-15) are pertinent to our needs, especially improvements required at the Waterman Ag. and NR Complex, plus outlying branches.
