Notes:
Soil profile - Soil profiles of all undisturbed soils is broken into three groups or layers (horizons).
1. The A horizon is normally organic matter rich. This top portion of the soil profile is called top soil by most people. Contains roots, bacteria, fungi, and small animals.
2. The B horizon is intermediate in character and has less organic matter than the A horizon. Depth is variable. This is the subsoil. Roots of some plants can penetrate here and obtain moisture as well as provide support. B horizons are deficient in mi
3. The C horizon is the layer below the sub-soil and this can extend down many feet if the soils are deep. It lies just above the bedrock. Virtually no biological activity goes on here.
Most root activity occurs in the A & B horizons up to a depth of 12-18 inches.
