What to Use to Replace Snapshot DF in the Landscape and Nursery
Keywords: herbicides, weed control
T he removal of Snapshot DF from the market has growers and landscapers concerned about finding a substitute. This product was a combination of an excellent grass herbicide (oryzalin) and a broadleaf herbicide (isoxaben). Fortunately both of the active ingredients in Snapshot DF are currently available on the market. Surflan 4AS (oryzalin) is available as a liquid formulation, and Gallery 75 DF (isoxaben) is available as a dry formulation. Applicators may tank mix these two products to produce essentially the same thing as Snapshot DF. Consult Table 1 for the mixing ratios of Surflan and Gallery to produce the ratio of active ingredients contained in Snapshot DF at the 2.5 lb. per acre rate.
The Surflan + Gallery tank mix is by no means the only effective grass-broadleaf herbicide combination. For example, Factor would be a good substitute for Surflan in a tank mix with Gallery. Princep and Goal are broadleaf herbicides that could substitute for Gallery in some situations. (Princep may be used only on woody perennials and Goal may be used only on conifers.) Combinations that are explicitly recommended on chemical labels are indicated in Table 2 by the letters following each herbicide.
Probably all possible combinations of broadleaf and grass herbicides listed in Table 2 in would be compatible, but a jar test is recommended to be sure. For example, I have used Princep + Surflan many times although the combination does not appear on either label.
All of the above suggestions are for sprayable herbicide formulations. My research suggests that sprayable formulations may provide longer control than a granular formulation of the same chemical applied at the same rate. Nonetheless, in some situations it is much more convenient to use granular herbicides. Granular herbicides that combine grass and broadleaf herbicides include Rout, OH-2, and Snapshot TG. Snapshot TG - a granular herbicide, contains somewhat different active ingredients than Snapshot DF - the discontinued sprayable form, and does not provide grass control as long. However, since grassy weeds are less of a problem in containers than broadleaves, Snapshot TG has been a very successful product for this use.
Table 1. How much Surflan + Gallery to use to obtain equivalent
amounts of active ingredients in Snapshot DF at the 2.5 lb./A rate.
Units Snapshot DF = Surflan 4AS + Gallery 75DF lb./A 2.5 lb. = 48 fl. oz. + 0.67 lb. oz./1000 sq. ft. 0.92 oz. = 48 fl. oz. + 0.25 oz.
