A Preview of the 68th Annual OSU Nursery Short Course

Keywords: educational programs, nursery, landscape, garden center, tree care

I n its 68th year, the OSU Nursery Short Course will follow tradition, offering a wide array of programs for the green industry. Owners, managers, and workers from throughout the green industry will find a great variety of educational programs addressing management, motivation, sales, production, plant materials, pest control, regulatory compliance, and more!

What's new? The '97 Short Course will feature a new format for the garden center, nursery, and landscape programs. In previous years, the programs for each of these areas were held on one or at most two days. This year we will be spreading the programs over all three days of the short course, allowing participants to opportunity to attend more sessions. The turf sessions, as in previous years, will occur on one day only (Wednesday).

Speakers, Speakers, Speakers! Over thirty-five speakers, many of whom are nationally recognized experts, will participate in the short course. Keynote speakers include Larry Helms, Bill Hendricks, and Joel Lerner. Each of these gentlemen have been well-received by Green Industry audiences across the U.S. Highlights of the landscape sessions include 'Selling Landscape Services' by Joel Lerner, 'Design of Perennial Gardens' by Bobbie Schwartz, and two sessions that feature construction and installation techniques for interlocking pavers and retaining walls. Carla Laurent and Miles McCoy (L&M Seminars) will be offering two power-packed programs geared to wholesale growers: 'Catalogs: Showcases for Nursery Products,' and 'Marketing Direct - Making Connections.'

Production-oriented programs for the nursery include 'Pot-in-pot Production' and 'Using Composts in Container Media.' For the Garden Center, Larry Helms will present 'Romancing the Customer' and Barbara Fails of Michigan State University will teach 'Garden Center Layout & Design' as well as 'Display Merchandising: Use of Color and Themes.'

From the business perspective, get a grip on current issues and trends by attending 'Immigration Issues for the Green Industry,' and 'Choosing Management Software for a Small Business.' These lists are just for starters………….Have I whetted your appetite yet?!

Arborist sessions. New for '97 will be 'Tree Care' sessions to be held on Monday and Tuesday of the short course. The Tree Care sessions will replace the municipal, commercial, and utility arborist sessions of past years, and are designed to appeal more broadly to the entire green industry. We hope that arborists and landscape professionals alike will find something of interest in these sessions. Dr. Don Ham from Clemson University, Clemson,
S.C. will be one of our featured Tree Care speakers. Dr. Ham will be discussing directional pruning techniques and also will offer a program on tree/turf competition. Dr. Bonnie Appleton will talk about 'After-Planting Care of Trees'. Arborists note: A total of 18 C.E.U. credits will be available throughout the three-day short course.

Plant Materials. Each day of the short course will offer opportunities to raise your plant IQ Don't miss programs on tree selection, ornamental grasses, shade lovers, and 'Plants for the 21st century,' to name a few.

Pesticide Recertification Credits. The OSU Nursery Short Course will be an excellent opportunity to obtain recertification credits and pest, disease, and weed control updates. Two hours of core credits will be available Monday; one hour of core and 3.5 hours of 6A will be available Tuesday; and 2 hours of core, 1 hour of 6A, and 5 hours of 8 will be be available Wednesday.
