Kylemore Abbey Kylemore Abbey Estate stretches for up to 400ha and is set in the heart of the Connemara mountains. The Castle, built in 1868 is one of the great neo-Gothic castles of this period remaining in Ireland. It became an Abbey in 1920 when purchased by the Irish Benedictine nuns and houses an international girls' boarding school. Visit the Abbey reception rooms, exhibition and video. Stroll by "The Lake Walk" to the gothic church (c1870) which is a miniature cathedral with impressive stained glass windows, columns of coloured marble and intricate stone carvings. currently under restoration, with assistance of an ERDF grant though the Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme and a FÁS scheme, is a 2.5ha Victorian walled garden which was one of the most impressive of its time in Ireland.
