Observations

Initially the annual ryegrass and wheat included in the Prairie Moon mixes led to rapid greening of those areas. During the first growing season (1997) the main things visible on both sites were weeds such as foxtail (Setaria viridis) and lambsquarters (Chenopodium album). We are tried to keep these under control by mowing every four weeks; this allowed the slower growing grasses and forbs to come on.

In the second season we started to see some of the species that were in our seed mixes. The most obvious were the fast growing composites, such as various species of coneflowers. On the 315 site these dominated the Prairie Moon tallgrass mixes, so that it was not easy to find any grass. Grasses tended to perform better in the Lofts Seed mixes that did not contain any wildflowers. The short grass mixes tended to be very weedy, especially on the Turf Science site where the soil was more fertile. In order to reduce the weed populations we cut the inflorescence off the more aggressive species: Arctium minus (burdock), Brassica nigra (black mustard), Daucus carota (wild carrot), Plantago lanceolata (plantain) and Rumex crispus (curly dock).
