Plants from tropical and sub-tropical climates thrive in the temperature-controlled environment of some greenhouses. These tropical houses create wonderful escape niches for the winter-weary locals. The walkways between greenhouse ranges have been turned into covered patios that provide a welcoming area for lunch or breaks from work. There is a long-standing tradition in Britain for greenhouses that display exotic tropical and subtropical plants, dating to the early Victorian times and exemplified by the grand conservatories of Kew Gardens in London. |
