Biddulph Grange: Potpourri
Above: The mystery at Biddulph
Grange is magnified by entrances to dark tunnels that lead you to parts
unknown; in this case, the entrance to China Garden
Arriving at China Gardens
from the Stumpery; a section of the Great Wall of China is shown at
right.
| The Garden provides
many interesting structural details (above, from left to right): A sphinx
at the Egypt garden, the ape of Thoth, a mythical beast in a dark corner
inside the Egypt pyramid; a wrought iron bench; and urn. |
Above: The Cheshire cottage,
which actually leads into the bowels of the Egyptian pyramid!
Above: The grand Wellingtonia
Avenue showing the gentle slope to the Grange and the countryside in
the background.
Above: The magnificent Lime
(Tilia or Linden) walk.
Above: The Pinetum, with
huge specimens of Araucaria and other exotic conifers.
Above: The pond, with water
lilies and the Rhododendron walk behind.
Above: The Glen, just below
the entrance to the tunnel for China garden; large-leaved Gunnera
in the background.
Above: The Dahlia walk showing
young Dahlias that will be in full bloom by late summer.
Above: The Stumpery, a garden
compartment created entirely from root stumps of beech and other large
trees. The crevices were planted with ferns and other shade-loving plants.
Cool idea!
| Right: Russell Morris, a local
artist that I encountered on the Dahlia walk. He is displaying a book of
pencil sketches he's done of the garden. His skill was outstanding and the
illustrations were just beautiful. He's hoping to organize a show of his
work at the Grange in the near future. It will be well worth a visit. |
