Sunday, 25 June, while the students were still in Dublin, I took a break with Andrew Taaffe and his family for an outing to an area close to the college called the Forest of Bowland, officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (so labelled on maps). Starting in the village of Scorton (left), we made our way up winding roads and came accross a stand(below left) selling herbs, aromatic potions, pies and other sweets (flapjacks). I was pleased that even in modern England, with the trials and tribulations of crime typical of modern societies, one can still find places that use an 'honesty pot.' As we continued to the top of a hill, we got wonderful views of the local countryside. A sunny day afforded us views of the Morescombe Bay, Blackpool tower to the west, and even Manchester to the south. |

| The afternoon was capped with a wonderful tea (dinner) at the Taaffe's in Preston who shared with me warm hospitality, enjoyment of their lovely garden (above right), a delicious meal which included introduction to gooseberry pie, and a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. | |
