Floral Clock of Edinburgh
In a little-noticed corner of Edinburgh, along Princess Street and The Mound, as you take steps that lead down to Princess Street Gardens, you come across a remarkable horticultural extravaganza: A working clock, set on a hillside, made up entirely of annual plants. In a supreme bout of irony, the magnificent sunny weather we had during our visit to Edinburgh made getting a good image of the clock very difficult, as the sun/shadow contrast was very stark. Nevertheless, these images can give a feel for the intricacy of the clock. The ladder noticed on the two images below is used to clip the plants and keep them at an even height. The clock was studded with hundreds of lobelias and sempervivums. A very remarkable item indeed.
