Continuing the Design Process

As we continue learning about the design process, Mike (seen above center; ... some of us think he looks like Tom Jones!) provided us some guidance on the technical aspects of developing a finished plan. He methodically walked through one of his designs pointing out the type of information needed in words and symbols, the organization of the plant schedule (or planting list; see black & white image at left below, noting the list of plants on the right half of it), as well as the redundancy of information needed to insure absolute clarity in the layout. He also showed us examples of some of the finished plans he had drawn that were fully colored and detailed (below right). Of course, none of us expect to match his level of skill or experience, but it was inspiring to see how important an instrument of communication a site plan is; and it was also revealing how time-consuming the entire process can be.

Our group has progressed quite well in our project and various ideas are beginning to take shape. At right is an example of the current status of one of our concepts for the Jones' garden.
