Friday, 16 June 2000 found our group meandering its way to the Lake District with a stop at Bowness on Windemere and a final destination at Grizedale Forest. The weather was sunny and warm and everyone was in particularly chirpy form. Nate Rogers (above, front row second from left) reports: "Grizedale Forest is located near Morecambe Bay in England's Lake District. The forest serves multiple purposes including timber production, recreation, and display of artwork. Visitors to the forest are welcomed by a visitor's center combined with a souvenir shop. Recreational opportunities include hiking, orienteering, and mountain biking (bikes are available for hire near the park's picnic area fro about £9 British pounds). Touring the forest by foot or bike provides access to countryside views and numerous sculptures that are installed within the forest. The views are highlighted by rolling hills and stone walls that restrict sheep from adjacent properties. On some vistas, it is possible to also hear sheep from across the valley. The functional use of Grizedale is evident on most of the hikes. Many of the trails run adjacent to clearcut sections of the forest. Recreational uses are literally combined with economic uses of Grizedale. |
