LEVENS HALL TOPIARY GARDENS CONTINUED

Again, direction of views at Levens is stressed through the use of focal points. One view of the fountain through the pleached lime hedge (upper left) gives an example of this. An urn coupled with the fountain (upper right) shows how more than one object is used as a focal point. In the formal English garden, it is very common to create views this way.

In the garden at Levens, yew, both common and golden, and boxwood are used to create the various shapes and sizes seen here. Amazingly, only 4 full-time staff members maintain the entire grounds. Pruning of the yew topiary and box edges starts in mid-October and lasts through to December. The topiary gardens at Levens have been by far, the most impressive formal gardens we have seen!
